Abrasion resistance – Taber test

Method description
The test makes it possible to determine the resistance of a surface to wear caused by repeated abrasion.
At least three specimens are mounted in the apparatus, and four quadrants are marked out on each of them. Abrasive strips, typically of grit 180 (ANSI-CAMI), are fitted to rubber wheels. As the specimen rotates, the surface is subjected to controlled abrasion.
The test continues until the initial wear point IP is reached, i.e. clearly visible wear-through of the surface in three of the four quadrants. The results of the three measurements are averaged in accordance with the requirements of the standard.

Test specimens
A minimum of 3 specimens measuring 100 × 100 mm.
The test duration varies – the test continues until the IP point is reached.
Benefit: relatively small specimens make it possible to compare objectively the resistance of several surfaces or technological variants.
Test standard
The test is performed in accordance with PN-EN 438-2+A1.
Benefit: you receive a comparable result for the abrasion resistance of the surface, obtained according to a standardised procedure.
